Artificial Intelligence
What is it?
Let's start with the concept algorithms. Algorithms are pieces of programming code. Very simply put, you give the computer the command if A happens then you do B. You already notice this on social media. If you search for cat videos you're probably going to get more cat videos. And you might also get a suggestion if you like dog videos. Before you know it you'll be in a pet bubble.
Next is artificial intelligence, also known as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Using algorithms, the computer learns to recognize patterns and makes a decision on its own. It then learns from mistakes again to become better at it.
What can it mean for a sex worker?
Algorithms are an integral part of everyday life, but they are not at all transparent. And bias can creep in unnoticed. An example is that more men than women apply for a technical job, after which the algorithm can decide that women are unsuitable.
Sex work is highly stigmatized, and in addition there is a high proportion of migrants, people of color, people in poor financial positions, etc. These are factors that can further strengthen the discrimination in the algorithm.
What can you do?
Not that much, but being aware of it already helps, so that every time you click on a message whose content you actually don't like you are telling the system that you find it interesting. That's why it's better to take a screenshot of a stupid Twitter message and post that instead of sharing the whole message.
The Government does be aware of the risks surrounding algorithms and they want, among other things, a algorithm regulator to it. The EU is considering regulations around algorithms and AI (artificial intelligence).
